   Hi,
I am interested in comments on this lineup data. In particular, what other questions are interesting to you?

This is also a trial of the Forums software and your browser to handle a chart formatted with <TAB>, and a trial of you and me. It may help you to use the browser control View/IncreaseFont or View/TextSize.

   - 1B and 2B,
- 3B and SS,
- LF and CF
were similar positions, based on the evidence from batting orders.

- 1B and 2B
The men who played 1B and 2B served almost identically as batters.

- 3B and SS
AL managers and 3Bmen John McGraw and Jimmy Collins generally batted first and third, which accounts for much of the difference from SS at the top of the order. NL shortstops Honus Wagner, Bobby Wallace and George Davis account for many of the games where the shortstop batted fourth, and much of the difference from 3B in the middle of the order. (Wagner played shortstop only part-time; Wallace and Davis more often batted 5th.)

- LF and CF
One or the other batted first 70% of the time. AL manager and CF Hugh Duffy batted 4th and 6th in his final season as a player, so his personal contribution moderated the profile of the composite CF. Duffy's effect was moderated by his half-time play, only 3% of MLB at his position. Despite him (I doubt that he belonged in CF), the composite CF was a heightened version of the composite LF as a batter.

Here, service and profile "as a batter" refer only to position in the batting order. No other batting statistics.
